I like Noises. The quiet is for sleeping. I’m not a pictures kind of guy - I have maybe a handful of photos and most of those are of my nephews. But I have piles and piles of CDs, tapes, and records that crystallize moments far better than any snapshot could - at least for me, anyway.
Growing up in Kent, Ohio, it would be easy to understand how I ended up in a band, since they seem to be all over the place. But whereas most of the kids in bands went from hair bands to punk rock, I went from the radio to progressive, mostly because that’s what my older brother was listening to. So one day I went from singing "I am Superman" all alone in my bedroom to watching everyone I knew singing "That’s me in the corner" everywhere I went. It was kind of weird.
But progressive getting popular did lead me to grunge, which became my bread and butter for a number of years. And Kurt Cobain led me to Eddie Vedder who led me to Ian McKaye who led me to Fugazi and punk rock. These days my tastes are a bit more eclectic than they were, but I’m still pretty much a music snob. So you should fear me. For this and many other reasons, you should fear me.
I play guitar. I’ve tried my throat at singing and the results were not always pretty. I do have a knack for yelling, though. These songs are examples of all of that.
Over a six year period (1996-2002) I was fortunate enough to play in three different bands with seven very talented people in two very different cities. We were garage rock: lo-fi, indie, math, alternative, emo, screamo, post-hardcore, punk rockers who liked to waste time plucking strings and beating skins.
Good times, good times...
For those of you who are sick in the head and enjoy these songs, I have all of them (and more!) in digital format, so feel free to e-mail me and I’ll see what I can do about getting them to you, assuming the other band members don’t mind.
Go behind the music...
